WordPress stuck in maintenance mode

Have you ever tried to update a plugin or theme in WordPress only to be left hanging? Well here is a nifty trick so you can complete the process.

When making an update, a file called .maintenance is created in the root folder of WordPress. This file informs WordPress to put your site in maintenance mode and contains information for your users to see while you’re doing your stuff. Once the update is completed, WordPress deletes the file and everything goes back to normal. But sometimes, this doesn’t happen and you can be left hanging on the update message forever.

Root folder where maintenance file lives

FIX: Using FTP (file transfer protocol) program such as FileZilla, go to your root folder and look for the .maintenance file, select it and delete is. Clear the browsers cache and reload your website. You can also login to cpanel and go to the File Manager.
